Public Access of Indianapolis, Inc. (PAI), an Indiana non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, was organized in 1997 by former public access producers to address the need for non-discriminatory, community access to cable television in Indianapolis.

PAI has based its organization and goals on successful and established community media access centers and public access channels around the country.

Goals

  • Establishing and maintaining an Indianapolis community media access center
  • Educating the public on the value and uses of community-based media, such as public access television
  • Training the community on the use of media production equipment
  • Promoting, producing and distributing media that represent the diverse interests and viewpoints of the community
  • Administering any local public access channel(s)
  • Supporting Public, Education and Government (PEG) Access channels, facilities and production on cable television
  • Promoting community access to additional types of media and emerging technologies

Background

PAI came into existences as a result of cable franchise agreements signed by the City of Indianapolis and Time-Warner and Comcast that brought an end to public access production and broadcast facilities. Recognizing a need for independent, locally-produced television programming targeted toward varied interests and viewpoints, a group of former public access producers and other interested people formed PAI.

PAI has done community video work for the Spirit & Place Festival, Indianapolis Capital Improvement Board (CIB) meetings, Freedom of Information Indiana, Quality for Indiana Taxpayers, The Alliance for Democracy, Organization for the Near Eastside, National Nike Action Day, Amnesty International and Africa Celebration '98.
